Learning a foreign language is a liberation from insularity and provides an opening to other cultures. A highquality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It should also provide opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and read great literature in the original language. Language teaching should provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries.”
(National Curriculum 2014)

Intent Statement

Our French curriculum is introduced to pupils in Year 3 and then developed across Key Stage 2. Carefully selected units of study provide basic oral and written skills and a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for our pupils. Exposure to another language will give children a new and broader perspective on the world, encouraging them to understand their own cultures and those of others

Intended Impact

During the children’s learning journey at St Gabriel’s, our intended impact of the MFL Curriculum is to ensure that:

  • Children will become confident to engage in simple conversations and will have an awareness of the vocabulary and language needed in a variety of situations
  • They will have an understanding of simple French language which will form the basis of future work to be undertaken in Key Stage 3
  • The children will have an awareness of intercultural understanding
  • Children will have gained an insight into similarities and differences between themselves and those of French speaking children
